Garage Door Opener Error Code Lookup in San Jose, CA
Look up what the blinking lights and diagnostic codes on LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman and Genie openers mean, and what to do next.
How opener error codes work
LiftMaster, Chamberlain & Craftsman
Openers with diagnostic arrows show a code as flashes of the UP arrow followed by flashes of the DOWN arrow. For example, 1 up flash then 4 down flashes is code 1-4. Older models without arrows use the learn-button LED or flash the opener light instead.
| Code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1-1 | No safety sensors detected: they're not installed, or a sensor wire is broken or disconnected. | Check that both sensor wires are connected at the opener terminals and look for cut or stapled wire along the wall. |
| 1-2 | Sensor wiring is shorted, or the two sensor wires are swapped at the terminals. | Look for a staple through the wire or bare wires touching, and check that the white and striped wires go to the matching terminals. |
| 1-3 | Wall-control wiring is shorted or connected to the wrong terminals. | Check the wire from the opener to the wall button for damage and loose or touching ends. |
| 1-4 | Safety sensors are out of alignment or something is blocking the beam. | Clear the path, wipe the lenses and adjust the sensors until both indicator lights are steady. |
| 1-6 | Safety sensors are losing their signal intermittently, often because of a loose bracket, sun glare or a damaged wire. | Tighten the sensor brackets, shade the receiving eye from direct sun and check the wiring. |
| 1-x | Safety sensor or wall-control wiring problem. | Check the photo-eye sensors and the thin wires running to them and to the wall button. |
| 2-x | Internal electronics fault in the opener. | Unplug the opener for a minute and plug it back in. If the code returns, the logic board usually needs replacing. |
| 3-x | Internal fault with the opener's travel or position sensing. | Reset the travel limits as shown in your manual. If the code persists, have a technician check the opener. |
| 4-x | The door stopped or reversed because it needed too much force: an obstruction, a binding or unbalanced door, or worn opener parts. | Pull the release cord with the door closed and lift it by hand. If it's heavy or won't stay halfway up, the springs need service. |
| 5-x | Motor or travel module fault. | Power-cycle the opener. If the code comes back, the motor or travel module needs a technician. |
Genie & Overhead Door
Genie openers show problems with LEDs on the powerhead and on the Safe-T-Beam sensors. The flash patterns vary by model and are printed in the owner's manual and often on a label inside the light lens.
Other brands
Linear, Marantec, Sommer, Skylink and other brands use their own codes. Find the model number on the motor unit and look up the code in that model's manual, or call us with the code and the model.
Blinking lights and other signs
| What you see | Likely cause | Service |
|---|---|---|
| Opener light flashes about 10 times and the door won't close | Common on LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers: the safety sensors are misaligned, blocked or not getting power. | Garage Door Sensor Repair |
| Green light on the receiving sensor is off or flickering | The sensors are misaligned or something is in the beam. Realign until the light is steady. | Garage Door Sensor Repair |
| Both sensor lights are off | The sensors aren't getting power: check the wiring at the opener terminals and along the wall. | Garage Door Sensor Repair |
| Wall button light is blinking and remotes don't work | The lock or vacation mode is probably on. Press and hold the lock button on the wall control to turn it off. | Remote & Keypad Programming |
| Opener clicks or hums but the door doesn't move | Often a broken spring, a stripped drive gear or a failed capacitor. Don't keep pressing the button. | Garage Door Opener Repair |
| Nothing happens at all, no lights | Check the outlet, breaker and GFCI. If there's power at the outlet, the logic board may have failed. | Opener Circuit Board Replacement |
Codes and light patterns differ between models and production years. Your owner's manual, or the label inside the opener's light cover, is the final word for your model.
